So, I run a dog sitting service. I can take up to 5 dogs at a time and I offer day services and full time care for when clients families are on holiday, ill , etc
6 weeks ago, I was due to take in a little Staffie cross for 2 weeks whilst the owner was on holiday. He arrived on the Monday and instantly I got bad vibes - I went through the paperwork with charlie (the dog)'s human and the owner said "careful though, he's a nasty little fucker" and proceeded to tell me this dog wasn't friendly and was a "pain in the arse". The owner left and it was a quiet time for me so it was just me, my dog and Charlie. As promised I took Charlie on long walks each day.
When dropped off, Charlie's owner gave me a crate and told me Charlie had to sleep in the crate or he "destroys everything". I put Charlie in his crate the first night and he cried all night long. Should also be mentioned that Charlie was WAY too skinny and very very nervous.
From the first night in, I let Charlie sleep in my room with my dog and the crying stopped straight away.
Another thing, after a day or two I noticed that Charlie had a lot of dried up scabs and cuts on his body and face. So, I took Charlie to the vets. The vets had to shave him bald in places and took a look. He saw a huge amount of bruising and open wounds. The vet said it was most likely from being kicked. But, this can't be proven, I guess.
Anyway, the two weeks passed and Charlie was an absolute pleasure to live with. He gained weight and looked much healthier, I made him homemade healthy food and he had tons of affection and loved playing with my dog. It was as if Charlie had never been let outside, he ran out in the garden like a crazy dog and bounded around with my own dog.
The day came for him to be picked up and I was worried how to approach the conversations with Charlie's owner. I felt incredibly uncomfortable sending Charlie home with that man. Anyway, days passed and the owner hadn't turned up. Another 4 weeks passed and he's still not come for beautiful Charlie.
Anyway, Ive decided that rather than report the owner and have Charlie lost into a shelter, I would like to keep Charlie. He has become a part of our family, my dog loves him and he has a great life here. But do I have any rights? Of the owner just turns up, am I able to stop him from taking him? Is there anyone I can call or contact in order to "adopt" Charlie and have some sort of legal power preventing him from taking Charlie?
Thanks in advance, I'm super lost and just want Charlie to be happy and safe.
Ps - this is in England - UK
